Non-prep veneers: options and limits

What are non-prep veneers?

Ultra-thin ceramic shells bonded without classic drilling. They can change shape, colour, small gaps, and selected misalignments — but only when tooth position, space, enamel, bite, and facial proportions allow an additive approach.

When are they appropriate?

Possible with small teeth, gaps, mild shape deviations, or a wish for controlled aesthetic refinement. Teeth and gums are examined; photos and digital scans support planning. A mock-up can show form and effect before definitive ceramics.

Where are the limits?

Not every situation can be solved without preparation. Protruding teeth, marked misalignment, large fillings, disease, or unfavourable load may require another treatment. The goal is not non-prep at any cost, but the most convincing aesthetic and functional solution with maximal preservation of healthy tooth structure.

Which alternatives may apply?

Non-prep is a possible indication, not a standard. Where alignment, enamel, bite, or proportions do not allow a purely additive solution, we work as minimally invasively as needed or choose another restoration. With shortened teeth and loss of vertical dimension, we often plan together with bite raising in an abraded dentition. If a lot of gum shows when smiling, we clarify the cause before veneer planning — ceramics change tooth form, not the gum line.

What if a veneer debonds, breaks, or is lost?

We use Rescue cement as our standard lute; in our experience, debonding or loss is uncommon. We do not repair damaged veneers — we replace them. Technique and documentation allow each veneer to be remade 1:1. Broken or lost veneers can thus be replaced inconspicuously; replacements can also be shipped so a dentist closer to home can seat them. A flawless fit is the priority — that is the treatment aim, not a guarantee that an incident will not occur.

How sensitive are the teeth afterwards?

Because of non-prep or only minimal preparation, there is usually no sensitivity, or only slight sensitivity. That does not replace an individual examination.

What does aftercare involve?

There are no special eating restrictions after seating. Reviews are usually once or twice a year. Additive non-prep work does not create a classic crown margin under which decay can hide — unlike conventional prepared veneers or crowns. Professional cleaning follows individual intervals. Hygiene includes interdental cleaning and floss. After a full-mouth restoration we routinely make a functional splint — not a classic grinding splint, but to help prevent bite-triggered early bruxism and to protect the veneers.
