What do TMD and bruxism mean?
TMD describes complaints in the interplay of joints, masticatory muscles, and bite. Bruxism is unconscious pressing or grinding, often in sleep. Signs may include muscle tension, morning jaw pain, headaches, limited opening, or visible tooth abrasion.
What can an occlusal splint do?
An individually made splint can protect teeth and restorations, distribute load, and unload joints and muscles. It does not replace diagnosis. Complaints, movement, bite, and tooth structure are examined first and followed over time.
Masseter botulinum toxin in bruxism
In marked masseter hyperactivity, botulinum toxin may be discussed after medical diagnosis as a complementary option. It selectively reduces muscle activity but does not resolve every cause of bruxism. Depending on product and indication, use may be off-label; benefit, risks, alternatives, and follow-up must be discussed individually.
Frequently asked questions
What can an occlusal splint achieve?
An individually made occlusal splint can protect teeth and restorations and unload the masticatory system; it does not replace diagnosis.
Does a splint stop tooth grinding?
It can protect teeth and unload the system. Whether it reduces the activity itself varies individually.
Does botulinum toxin replace the splint?
Not as a rule. The procedures pursue different goals and can only be framed sensibly after diagnosis.
