Botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid?

Differences between botulinum toxin and hyaluronic fillers, possible goals, and the role of a medical facial analysis.

Medically reviewed by DR. MED. DR. MED. DENT. HANS KREHN

Two different modes of action

Botulinum toxin selectively reduces muscle activity and is used mainly for expression lines. Hyaluronic fillers add volume, support tissue, or contour selected areas. The procedures are therefore not interchangeable.

What suits personal aesthetics?

Medical analysis considers expression, volume distribution, skin quality, vascular anatomy, and proportions. The goal is not maximal change, but treatment that preserves expression and personality. Sometimes no injection, another sequence, or a deliberately restrained approach is better.

Safety and limits

Both are medical procedures with possible side effects. Product choice, dose, injection plane, and aftercare belong in experienced medical hands. Goals, limits, alternatives, and warning signs should be explained clearly beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Are botulinum toxin and hyaluronic fillers interchangeable?

Botulinum toxin and hyaluronic fillers are not interchangeable: botulinum reduces mimetic activity; hyaluron adds volume or contour.

Which works faster?

Hyaluronic effects are often immediately visible. Botulinum toxin typically develops over several days.

Can both be combined?

Yes, when different findings are to be treated. Combination is not automatically necessary.
